Immediate prepartum supplementation accelerates progesterone decline, boosting passive immunity transfer in tropically adapted beef cattle

Context Poor nutrition of late-pregnant cows is highly prevalent in the dry tropics and associated with high levels calf mortality. Aims It was hypothesised that supplementation protein to prepartum would restore normal decline progesterone increase transfer passive immunity calves, this being further enhanced by inclusion yeast fermentation products. Methods In total, 84 heifers 45 were selected for a completely randomised block design, following three dietary treatments: unsupplemented, receiving ad libitum low-protein hay only; supplemented 1 kg/day protein; both 14 g/day Saccharomyces cerevisiae product. Supplementation occurred an average days before calving. Cow plasma samples week parturition, first sample after analysed metabolites. Newborn calves weighed blood-sampled times per during 2 weeks birth. The two total protein, albumin, globulin concentrations. Data using mixed-effects model concentration over time modelled non-linear segmented model. Key results Prepartum reduced cow liveweight loss, increased glucose, fat mobilisation metabolites tended daily weight gain calves. Including products supplement decreased parturition including advanced initiation decline. Conclusion Protein protein-deficient beef late pregnancy helps decrease parturition. Implications This study identified plausible hormonal mechanism explaining how poor around birth can opening new possibilities short-term diet management strategies reduce mortality improve health.
